Applied Learning

Applied Learning plays a crucial role in helping students to decide on their personalised learning pathway. Here at Haybridge students have a number of options ranging from vocational/applied course, work based learning, work experience or a specialised work placement.

Department members include:

  • Sarah McGrath - Head of Applied Learning
  • Teresa Kane - Diverse Curriculum Coordinator
  • Phil Ashman - Connexions Personal Advisor
  • Ray Beechey - Applied Learning Mentor

Work Based Learning

Students can participate in Work Based Learning in Key Stage 4. This style of learning involves any business or training provider that brings together the learner, the school and the workplace. Currently we have 50 students participating in a work based learning course on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. The following information is a taster of what this involves:

[LEFT] Two Year 10 students working on a motor engine at their placement at Black Country Wheels, completing their MII Award in Vehicle Fitting Operations.

[ABOVE] One of our Year ten students helping to clean the stables, as part of her NVQ Level 1 in Horse Management.

[BELOW] Two Year 10 students after completing their bird boxes on their NCFE in Creative Crafts (Construction) at Wolverley High School.

During year nine students will be introduced to our on - line resources, “Fast Tomato” and “B Live”, both interactive career packages. They will be given the opportunity to think about their learning styles and their individual learning pathway and the future. Following on from this, students will participate in a Learning Pathway Interview with the vocational team to discuss their options and their chosen future pathway.

Year 10 students will have the opportunity to go on Work Experience for one or two weeks during the summer term. Career taster days can also be offered where applicable. During PD lessons students will participate in career /work related learning lessons to help them prepare for the future. This PD programme continues in Year 11 with the introduction of my iplan, an interactive progress file. Students will then participate in mock interviews, writing their CV ready to attend Open Days in the Spring Term.

Our Personal Advisor, Phil Ashman from Connexions will interview all students and hold group sessions with students to discuss application forms, their future etc.The team are allocated in the Science Block in the vocational office to give specialised advice to students from Year 9 to Year 13, with help on careers, colleges and UCAS.
