The Mathematics Department at Haybridge High School takes pride in its subject and its outstanding achievements. Mathematics is a wonderful subject, underpinning many other disciplines and we aim to give the strongest mathematical grounding possible to all our students, whilst showing them just how fascinating and interesting Mathematics can be.
As a department, we do our utmost to ensure every student reaches their potential in Mathematics. We deliver lessons in a purpose-built area, including a
mathematics-only computer suite and study area, and each classroom has an interactive whiteboard. We make use of a range of technologies, such as ‘Qwizdom’ voting pads, dynamic geometry software, graphing software and more.
We understand the importance of homework for consolidating knowledge and deepening understanding and use a variety of means for setting homework. Students complete exercises, revise topics, research future topics and make extensive use of MyMaths online, which provides instant feedback and opportunities to improve.
Our students participate in extra-curricular mathematics every year with the UKMT Mathematics Challenges, the Jaguar Maths in Motion Challenges and our own departmental competitions. We provide enrichment classes for year eight gifted mathematicians and for year six students from our local primary schools.
Key Stage 3
In years 7 and 8, students receive six lessons per fortnight in Mathematics.
At Key Stage 3, Mathematics is divided into three main areas: Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measures, and Statistics. Incorporated into these are the skills of using and applying mathematics through problem-solving exercises.
Key Stage 4
In years 9 to 11, students receive five lessons per fortnight in Mathematics.
Students at Key Stage 4 study the same curriculum areas as at Key Stage 3 but aim towards either the Higher-tier (to Grade A*) or Foundation-tier (to Grade C) GCSE examinations.
Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form)
In the Sixth Form we offer AS and A2 courses in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics, combining modules of Pure (Core) Mathematics, Statistics, Mechanics and Decision Maths.
We also offer GCSE re-sit sessions for those students who need a C in GCSE Mathematics.
