The Modern Foreign Languages department is committed to the development of the life long language learner who begins to develop an interest in the language and culture of other countries. We offer a range of languages including Chinese which aims to offer a full breadth of language study.
Using a variety of teaching techniques and technologies, we aim to engage pupils at all levels and to help them achieve their potential.
Key Stage 3
At KS3 students study French, German and Spanish on a carousel basis for a term each in year 7 and 8. From September 2009, students will study two languages from French, German and Spanish.
Chinese lessons are offered to students in KS3 and KS5 as an extra-curricular course. We offer taster conversation classes in school time to all and after school classes are also available. We have a strong link with our partner school in Chengdu in the Sichuan province of China.
Key Stage 4
At KS4 we offer German GCSE and French GCSE.
Key Stage 5
At KS5 we offer French and German AS and A2 Levels.

The department has the use of a suite of 5 purpose built rooms on one floor of a new teaching block. Each room is carpeted and has interactive white board facility. A large open resource area outside the rooms allows for independent study at a suite of computers. A brand new sixth form study area is planned for September 2009.
Visits and links abroad
We have strong international links with our partner schools in Paris, Chengdu and Langenfeld, Germany. We offer exchange visits as well as providing collaborative study opportunities for all students.
