Haybridge Fencing Club is now up and running, meeting on Wednesday afternoons from 3.45
until 5 pm. All are welcome, from complete beginners to experienced fencers, pupils and
staff.
Fencing is a modern sport with a long history in which there are three weapons
used; foil, epee and sabre.
At foil and epee, points are scored by hitting your opponent's valid target area with the
point of the weapon, using sufficient force to make or break (depending on the weapon) an
electrical circuit. A coloured light signals a "good" hit. At sabre, a cut to your
opponent's upper body scores a hit.
Statistically safer than crown green bowls, fencing is a sport that can be enjoyed
by anyone at any level, from world champion to complete novice. There are many
competitions at all levels, and Haybridge fencers who have started fencing this term
will join their more advanced team mates in City and Regional competitions in the autumn
term.
A great adrenalin rush and fitness boost, fencing also exercises the brain. You must
beat your opponent mentally as well as physically.
