Absence from School

Absence from School

We are keen to help and support all our students and their parents/carers so they have the best possible experience at Haybridge and reach their full potential. There is strong statistical evidence to show that students who have excellent attendance are more successful in school and achieve to a significantly higher standard. We are keen that everyone aims for 100% attendance at school. The table below highlights the link between attendance and learning.

If a student’s attendance over the school year is..

In order that we might be sure of the whereabouts and safety of our students we ask that parents/carers ring the school by 9.00am on the morning of the first day of absence to notify us of the situation (the Absence mailbox telephone number is 01562 881133). If the absence extends beyond two days, parents/carers should ring again to keep the school informed. On return to school, a letter signed by the parents/carers is required to confirm the reason for absence and the dates involved. We ask that this letter is brought to school on the first day back.

Years 7 to 11 students: If medical or dental appointments have to be made in school time, an appointment card or a letter from parents/carers should be shown to the Form Tutor and then handed into the Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8) or Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 and 11) Student Support Office at least 48 hours prior to the day concerned.

Years 12 and 13 students: If medical/dental appointments or University visits have to be made in school time, an appointment card or a letter from parents/carers should be shown to Ms Thornhill in the Sixth Form Student Support Office at least 48 hours prior to the day concerned. Alternatively, parents/carers can email Ms Thornhill at wthornhill@haybridge.worcs.sch.uk

Holidays in term time are not allowed and any such absence will be recorded as unauthorised. In exceptional circumstances, requests should be made in writing directly to the Headteacher.

We would hope that parents/carers can help by:

  • not letting their son/daughter(s) take time off school for minor ailments;
  • arranging appointments and outings after school hours, at weekends or during school holidays;
  • not taking holidays during term time.

If we have a concern regarding a student’s attendance we will notify parents/carers by phone or letter. We work closely with our Education Welfare Officer to monitor and support students but particularly those who have an attendance figure of 85% or below.
